I think writers def should surprise readers with twists, but I only hesitate at the word "shock" simply because sometimes shock-value can also be distracting and almost see-through in some works. Nonetheless, I think you've got some great ideas in here:)Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01793077012143289985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6083612851716281896.post-77332952873868513982011-08-17T03:43:17.471-07:002011-08-17T03:43:17.471-07:00Yup, I can be won over by them - as long as they a...Yup, I can be won over by them - as long as they are germane to the plot and not optional extras.Dave Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08430484174826768488noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6083612851716281896.post-56868499295284071042011-08-16T23:12:40.873-07:002011-08-16T23:12:40.873-07:00Ooh, I love these three S's! More for the one I am currently writing than the first. Spooky however is few and far. The most spooky thing is in the first book, but its not spooky until things are revealed in the second and third books.SBJoneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10457239074744509487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6083612851716281896.post-88479347261384603752011-08-16T08:54:29.591-07:002011-08-16T08:54:29.591-07:00This was a great post, Rachna, and gives me lots t...This was a great post, Rachna, and gives me lots to think about as I work through the current rewrite of my WIP. I think as a reader, I love most to be surprised, especially if the surprise has a humorous twist. I can't say that I love to be shocked. But a shocking turn sure gets my attention and makes me turn the page, no doubt about it. I do like to be spooked in the sense of a good ghost story. I don't like horror-spooking, but the eerie, mysterios spook factor, yes. I love ghost stories and the supernatural.Elizabeth Varadan, Authorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01708206753256682635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6083612851716281896.post-32532994835803232842011-08-16T05:52:19.015-07:002011-08-16T05:52:19.015-07:00Glad you posted this! I hadn't read it - must not have been following at the time it was posted. :) I like the breakdown; working on editing some of my chapters and it is good food for thought. It is interesting, as you say, that we don't like these elements in real life, but we do like to see them in a plot.
