My July IWSG Post

I’m enjoying the pace I have deliberately chosen this year. I am doing projects that I want to do. No unnecessary pressures and deadlines. I am super happy to read a lot of books. I am following the mantra for this year, taking it easy. Making contacts and building up connections. I feel this phase of my life and writing is so spiritual. Each and every book I read and each and every project I work on, is giving me happiness.

Before I digress further, let me get back on track. Its IWSG (Insecure Writers Support Group) day. IWSG started by Online Rock Star, Author Extraordinaire, Ninja Captain, Musician Par Excellence - Alex Cavanaugh (author of Amazon Bestsellers: CassaStar, CassaStorm, CassaFire and Dragon of the Stars) is an online group of writers posting on the first Wednesday of the month.

Our IWSG posts are about our writing fears and insecurities, we discuss all things related to writing and publishing. IWSG is a huge stress buster for many of us. The IWSG website is a treasure house of writing information.

3rd July IWSG Question is: "What personal traits have you written into your character(s)?"

Many of my characters have quite a bit of my traits. My middle grade protagonist Kyna is fiercely loyal and independent like me and also very creative, but in a naughty way. Another middle grade character Rahul has my fear of dogs and dislike of bullies. Ria, the protagonist of my love story is so like me in many ways: her eating habits, her clothes, as well as her determination. I think we writers do this without realizing. Subconsciously we imbue our characters with our traits, likes and dislikes. I don’t even realize it when I am writing. But later I feel, OMG, this character is so like me.

What about you all? What personal traits do you give your characters?

  1. Glad you're in a good place of peace.
You'd mentioned not liking dogs before so I wondered if that entered into your stories.

  4. I love to give my characters my traits. I especially did this with the MC in my book baby (not yet published).

  5. I like your mantra for the year. Taking each moment to enjoy life is a good.
I try not to give my characters my traits, but they do seep into them.

  6. All of my characters have some of my traits. Some more than others and yes, they do seem like me.

  7. I always infuse my characters with my quirks and traits. All of them are passionate and emotional, like me, but also strong and they are all fighters. Life keeps knocking them down, but the always seem to "lick their wounds" and continue on.

Your characters sound so endearing, that is why your stories are so well loved! Keep up the wonderful work!

  8. I so enjoyed your post, Rachna! It is encouraging and inspiring. I try very hard to keep myself out of fiction stories I write, but it is hard. I've worked my fear of heights into more than one story. I was playing around with some ideas for the IWSG anthology contest and was disgusted to realize that the main characters were really my brother and me. Maybe I shouldn't fight it! LOL All the best to you!

  10. And sometimes our characters are who we want to be more like! Minus the bad stuff. Wonderful post, thanks for sharing!

  11. I think you've written something that reveals a lot about this writing process. Where do those characters come from but from the very central part of us--so central that we only recognize how much of ourselves we've poured into them after we step away from creating them. (Now that is one convoluted sentence.)

  12. Rachna, we are on similar paths. Life is so much more relaxed this year for me. And that joy of reading lots of books? I'd almost forgotten what that feels like. I wish you peace and success.

  13. I'm so glad your pace is working so well for you this year. I finally stopped putting pressure on myself and that's when I started writing again, for the joy of it, so I can understand what you mean. I hope the rest of the year will be just as peaceful and joyful for you!

  14. Rachna! I honestly feel because we drawing creativity from the deep wells of our brain, everything will reflect our truest selves within a degree. I do wonder how villains play a part of our stories? I shiver at the thought. What do you think?

  15. At least you are enjoying the projects you are working on. Being selective is a great way to stay actively writing and give yourself a break at the same time.
