What I read last month

There was a time I could finish a book in just a few hours, maximum in a day. Not so anymore. With all that I am doing: teaching in college, writing for the newspapers, blogging and working on my books, reading not just suffers but also takes a back seat. I forgot to mention that quite a bit of my reading time is taken up by Candy Crush. I am reducing the game time, but still my reading is slow.

Last month I could just manage to read three books:

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney

Maggot Moon by Sally Gardener

Belle Epoque by Elizabeth Ross.

I loved the three books. Wimpy kid had me rolling with laughter. In every Wimpy kid book Jeff Kinney has new things to introduce to the readers.

When I started Maggot Moon, I took time to adjust to the narrative voice which was very unique. I fell in love with the writing only half-way through the book.

Belle Epoque was such a lovely book that I have recommended it to my students. The book talks of the high society of Paris and its emphasis on external beauty and opulent decadence. I fell in love with both the story and its heroine Maude Pichon.

This month I will be bogged down with loads of assignments to correct. So, my reading for this month will be limited to just three books from my huge TBR pile. I have already selected the three books.

Everyday by David Levithan

Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson

Frozen by Melissa De La Cruz and Michael Johnston

Is your reading going for a toss like my reading is going? Which books have you all read recently or plan to read? I would love to know.

  1. I am reading 'No Man's Land' by Nilesh Shrivastava, then I need to read one more technical book for review purpose. And then, I plan to start reading a few classics. High time I did. Could you recommend some good (but not overly long) classics? Thanks.

  2. I'm trying to read a few classics that I haven't read before. The one I'm reading at the moment is Bleak House by Dickens.

  4. Kinney's books are a big hit here as well.

I hope you enjoy your weekend Rachna.

  5. I loved Belle Epoque. It was brilliant. I haven't read the others you mentioned.

I've been reading a lot, but mainly as research for the book I'm writing. I'm reading a lot of mysteries (adult) because I'm writing one, and I'm reading them as a writer; i.e., noticing how they open, what the pacing is like, how characters are introduced, the arc of the story, the climax, etc.

  6. I think 3 books in a month is good. I only manage 1-2 and that's usually other debut novelists for review. I've heard really good things about David Levithan. I hope you enjoy all three books - happy reading! :)

  7. Sounds like your plate is pretty full, Rachna. Congratulations on being able to read the number of books that you did :-) I just finished "Twenty and Ten" by Claire Huchet Bishop, a small book about children in WWII. If I were to revisit a classic this year it would be A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. I read it a long time ago, and I think I'd like to go back and see why it has stuck with me all these years...

  8. I have so many books to read.
I'm at least starting to ween myself off Candy Crush.

  9. I'd got out of the habit of reading regularly. Not sure how that happened really, but I'm putting it right by making more time for books.

  12. I'm reading Unbroken and that is an amazing story. They're making a movie of it due out later this year.

I've also read The Frugal Book Promoter. I want to average two books a month and am well on my way.

  13. Belle Epoque sounds delightful.

I'm behind in reading ARCs. I need to stop requesting so many on NetGalley. It's pressure reading them by launch time.

  15. Candy Crush is sinful, isn't it! :))

My reading slows down when I'm reading an indie book that I'm not too into to but feel I need to finish and review. Those are generally the only books I "read". Otherwise, I'm an audiobook girl.
