Which is your favourite classic book?

The other day a blog buddy of mine Rajesh from Destination Infinity asked me to suggest a list of classic books he should read. It took me several days to think of the classics that he could enjoy. I did send him a short list of the more famous books. But when another blog buddy Alka from Freebird asked me to suggest a few contemporary books, I suggested many.  I feel bad that my reading list comprises of the current bestsellers only.

Its ages since I have read a classic. I have read classics a lot during my school days. The only classics I have read in the last few years are Anna Karenina, Catcher in the Rye, Wuthering Heights.

My favourite classics are Pride and Prejudice, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Mill on the Floss, Gone with the Wind, Jane Eyre, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Treasure Island, Oliver Twist, all these books were compulsory reading in our school and college. There are so many classics I have not yet read. I would love to read a few every year.

What about you all? Have you read any of the classics recently? Which classic book or books would be you your all time favourite book?

  1. I used to enjoy thrillers and mystereys earlier, but these days I prefer classics and literary fiction. I guess age also has a say in what books we like! The classic that I am reading now, 'Pride and Prejudice' is an excellent novel. I definitely wish to read more classics. My only complaint is - classics are overly long. But investing time in reading each and every page is worth it - there is so much to learn in them!

  2. I simply don't have the time to read too many classics. I want to be a speculative fiction editor, so the only classic that'll really help me is The Lord of the Rings. Writing has changed a lot since the time of "classics." They're no longer a good influence for anyone writing today.

  3. All time fave would probably be Kill a Mockingbird, although I haven't read it recently and my fondness for it probably has a lot to do with my age when I read it. Robert Louis Stevenson's Black Arrow was also great.

  4. I don't read many classics. I guess I'd recommend a Sherlock Holmes novel or one by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

  5. My favorite classics? Jane Eyre, for sure. And To Kill a Mockingbird. And Sherlock Holmes. But I have liked a lot more besides. I thought Treasure Island was fantastic. And, for younger readers, The Cuckoo Clock, A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden.

  6. Essentials for me include "The Count of Monte Cristo," "The War of the Worlds," and "Frankenstein." I'm not sure whether "The Lord of the Rings" counts as a classic novel or not, but that's also an important book that I think everyone should read at some point.

  8. Now that's something I haven't thought about in a while. I guess my favourite classics are some of those I read in childhood:

    Black Beauty
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
    Swallows and Amazons.

    I still adore those books.

  10. The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by R.L. Stevenson, Dracula by Bram Stoker, Jules Verne's classics are good.
But Daniel Defoe's The adventures of Robinson Crusoe is my all favourite classics of all.

  13. Oh, that's tough...so many good ones. I'd say, add Lawrence Durrell's Alexandrian Quartet to the list, especially _Justine_. :)

  14. I am absolutely obsessed with "Catch-22." I also adore "Cannery Row" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." So many others, but those are the best of the best, in my opinion! :)

  15. My all time favorite is probably Jane Eyre. I had classics book club with my best friend, so we could read classics we hadn't read in school (or we could reread them). We were doing great until we got to a classic neither of us could get through. We keep saying we need to start it up again! :) Thanks for the reminder.
